Traveling With Medication

You may now bring medications in carry-on baggage

Recently relaxed TSA regulations permit carry-on of unlimited quantities of medications on commercial aircraft in the US. Please keep in mind the following points when traveling with medications:

  • Prescription labels are no longer necessary.
  • You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. BUT if the medically necessary items exceed 3 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST declare to one of the Security Officers at the checkpoint for further inspection.
  • All traveling patients should have a recent travel letter (less than 12 months old). If you require a new travel letter, please call our office.
  • If you do not wish to subject your medications to x-rays, ask the security officer to screen them manually. We are not aware of any risk posed to medications by x-rays.
  • HGH should always be carried on-board. Cool packs may be carried on, provided they are necessary to maintain the temperature of a refrigerated injectable medication.
  • Plastic tubes of hormonal cream may burst in the cargo hold, but cream syringes should not.

If you have questions regarding this policy, please call our office or visit the TSA website.
