Prostate Cancer: Prevention & Treatment

RC: Hello Dr. Salerno, how are you today?

Dr. John Salerno: Hi Liz. Oh, thank you, very good, thanks for asking and hope you’re well.

RC: I’m doing great. Thanks so much for joining me.  What are some symptoms of prostate disease or cancer?

Dr. John Salerno: Yes, some of the early symptoms of prostate disease or cancer are difficulty urinating, having difficulty releasing urine, blood in the urine. Sometimes low back pain can be a symptom, so these are sometimes serious signs that we need to pay attention to for sure.

RC: How is prostate disease diagnosed?

Dr. John Salerno: Generally, it’s diagnosed several ways. We use a simple blood test to check for something called the PSA, and the free PSA to see if there is either an enlarged prostate or if there is cancer developing. We also can use here at the Salerno Center a prostate ultrasound, and also a digital rectal exam that is performed here to check for masses or check for the size of the prostate.

RC: What treatment options are available for someone with prostate disease?

Dr. John Salerno: There are several options available for cancers or supremely enlarged or severely enlarged prostate. There are surgical options, of course. Something called T or TURP treatments. More benign treatments that we offer here are geared towards first looking at hormone levels like high estrogen in men and reducing them with things like DIM or Indole-3-carbinol, vitamins. We use saw palmetto to reduce the size of the prostate, and we use intravenous IV, particularly vitamin C therapy to reduce the size and some cancers of the prostate in conjunction with traditional remedies.

RC: What are some lifestyle and diet changes that can help prevent prostate disease?

Dr. John Salerno: We often tout eating plenty of vegetables, particularly tomatoes that have a lot of lycopene in them. Avoiding things like refined starches and sugars for sure, that can adversely affect the prostate. Low carb foods, natural fats, and again plenty of vegetables and nutrients that would protect and nourish the prostate.

RC: Well, thank you, Dr. Salerno. We know you’re extremely busy, so I just want to thank you for your time and your help today.

Dr. John Salerno: Thank you, Liz.
