Firstly, are those that are zero sugar and very low in the bad carbs.
Secondarily, and just as importantly, foods that contain a lot of vitamin K2 which is found in dairy, particularly cheese.
Thirdly, good proteins, steaks, meats, chickens that have high amounts of proline and lysine. And of course, tomatoes, berries, grapefruits, foods that have high amounts.
Finally, plenty of vegetables, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower that have high amounts of vitamin C are extremely important and preventative in heart disease.

RC: Hello everyone, this is Liz Harvey coming to you from our studios in New York City where we are dedicated to bringing you top quality advice from many of the leading expert professionals across the U.S. In today’s episode, we are speaking with Dr. John Salerno, founder of the Salerno Center for Complementary Medicine in Manhattan on East 55nd Street between 5th and Madison Avenue. Lauded as an international pioneer in the field of anti-aging, Dr. Salerno’s techniques have been proven to slow the aging process and encourage a healthy and vitality-filled life for his patients through natural treatments.
Dr. Salerno is well known for his vitamin IVs, weight-loss treatments and chelation therapy. He is the author of two books, Fight Fat with Fat and Salerno Solutions, which are both available on his website, www.SalernoCenter.com.
Today we are going to talk about a very important topic:
Prevent Coronary Artery Plaque and Reverse Heart Disease with Vitamin C and Amino Acids
RC: Hello Dr. Salerno, how are you today?
Dr. John Salerno: Liz, thank you. Thanks so much for having me today.
RC: Well, thanks for joining me. Let’s get started.
How does vitamin C help reverse heart disease and prevent artery plaque?
Dr. John Salerno: It’s a very interesting concept that was developed many years ago by one of the brightest minds of the twentieth century, Linus Pauling, and his theory essentially said that scurvy of the coronary arteries is what is causing heart disease in America, meaning lack of vitamin C affecting the coronary arteries. Vitamin C will actually allow for repair and reduction of plaque in the arteries, particularly those arteries that have been damaged either by high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Vitamin C helps to repair collagen and keep the artery from forming these areas of damage, which allows for blood clots to form and hence plaque.
Which foods should we be eating that are naturally rich in vitamin C?
Dr. John Salerno: Fruits like tomatoes are extremely high in vitamin C. So are berries to some degree. Even grapefruit is extremely high in vitamin C. We should really be eating foods that are rich in those on a daily basis and we should probably also supplement vitamin C as modern day stresses are affecting our body stores and levels of the vitamin. We’re one of only a few mammals that do not produce vitamin C.
What are the names of the most common amino acids and what foods are they found in?
Dr. John Salerno: Well, the amino acids that we look at that reverse and help potentially keep plaque from forming in the first place are called proline and lysine, and these amino acids are found in good meats, turkey, chickens, etc. and in some dairy products for sure. They are extremely essential in keeping something called the lipoprotein(a) from sticking to these damaged coronary arteries and forming plaque in the form of LPA or cholesterol plaque, so this is extremely important. We also of course recommend taking proline and lysine, which we have in a product in addition to vitamin C which we call Vitamin C Factor here in my office. It’s extremely important to also supplement, particularly those that don’t eat a lot of protein.
How do amino acids help reverse heart disease and keep the heart healthy?
Dr. John Salerno: The amino acids will bind the lipoprotein(a) and wash it out through the blood and through our systems rather than allowing this sticky form of cholesterol, lipoprotein(a), from sticking to the coronary arteries and forming plaque.
Should everyone be taking a dietary supplement or only those with a vitamin deficiency?
Dr. John Salerno: No. We like to measure, here at the Salerno Center, vitamin levels, and most of our patients are deficient, particularly in vitamin C. Again, we’re one of only a few mammals that do not make our own vitamin c, and ironically, we’re one of the only two or three that actually have heart disease. The mammals that do produce vitamin C have no heart disease, which is quite interesting in and of itself, but yes, I recommend that everyone take vitamins that have vitamin C, proline, lysine, and vitamin K to prevent this plaque buildup.
RC: Thank you so much, Dr. Salerno. We know you’re extremely busy, so I just want to thank you for your time and help today.
Dr. John Salerno: Thank you so much, Liz.
