Today we are going to talk about a very important topic:
Heavy Metals in Makeup & Skincare
Hello Dr. Salerno, how are you today?
John Salerno: Hi Liz, very good. Thank you. Thanks for having me.
RC: Thank you for joining me.
What kind of heavy metals are found in makeup and skincare?
Dr. John Salerno: The majority of skincare products and makeup consists of lead unfortunately. Some of which is in very high amounts. We also can see occasionally aluminum and we can also see sometimes some mercury and copper. The majority of makeup is lead.
Are any of these heavy metals safe to use on our skin?
Dr. John Salerno: No they’re not. In fact, they’re not known to have any biological significance other than being toxic to the human body.
What are the health risks associated with exposure to these metals?
Dr. John Salerno: Particularly lead and aluminum clearly in adults and in children, of course, they both can cause issues with brain fog, memory loss, dementia. We see lead affecting women particularly from a standpoint of cancer. It can also cause heart disease and inflammation in the coronary arteries. It’s clearly problematic and we need to avoid makeups that have these heavy metals.
Are certain segments of the population more vulnerable to these risks?
Dr. John Salerno: Well, probably women that need to apply and re-apply makeup more frequently, like those in acting and Hollywood and newscasting whom we see a lot here in Manhattan. We often find that these patients have extremely high levels. We routinely measure all of these heavy metals in all of our patients as frequently as we would cholesterol and lipids. We do find high levels, particularly in women that need to re-apply and continually apply the makeup.
Can anything be done to reverse any potential damage to the body caused by heavy metal?
Dr. John Salerno: Yes. In my practice here at the Salerno Center in New York, we do IV chelation therapies on patients that have very high levels of lead. We use calcium EDTA, a product in the IVS, it’s an amino acid which is FDA approved for lead. We also have them go on nutrients for detoxing, like sprays. We have them do certainly some infrared saunas to allow them to sweat out the toxins and we’ll put them on things like cilantro and garlic as condiments to reduce the toxic burden of heavy metals, and selenium, for example, is a vitamin. We use something else called metal free spray in my practice. It depends to which degree these metals are elevated and we would accordingly get a program for them.
RC: Great. Well thank you so much, Dr. Salerno. We know you’re extremely busy so I just want to thank you for your time and your help today.
