Butter! The Old New Superfood!

When you think of Superfoods, you should think of Butter. Butter has been around for thousands of years. But butter has gotten a bad reputation for many years. The low fat diet craze that started in the late 1950’s, left us fearing butter, and worse, switched us over to margarine and more processed oils. But be aware, butter is healthier than margarine and most oils out there. You just need to be informed on why that is. We are talking about real butter; Organic, raw, grass fed, unpasteurized butter. Yummy!

  • Butter is rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA); this helps to keep you lean by moderating body fat levels. It can help your body to utilize fat instead of storing it. Yes, it can keep you lean.
  • Butter contains fatty acids, omega 3, and omega 6 essential fats. These play an important role in hormone balance, skin health, brain, eye and joint health, as well.
  • Butter is a great source of vitamins and minerals. It contains good amounts of Vitamin D, A, K2 and E. These important vitamins are responsible for healthy thyroid and adrenal function. It also provides the minerals zinc, chromium and selenium. All these are much needed for immune function, healthy skin, cognitive function, and blood sugar regulation.
  • Forget what you thought you knew about cholesterol. Butter has cholesterol and cholesterol is needed for brain development and the production and regulation of hormones. You actually need cholesterol for vitamin D production and to support a healthy heart.

If you want to include butter in your diet you should look for organic, raw, grass fed butter. If you are not able to get raw butter where you live, another great choice would be grass fed, organic butter from a local farm or health food store.

You can also make your own cultured butter from whole cream. Cultured butter contains the beneficial bacterial strains, lactobacillus planterum and lactococcus lactis. These help keep your gut and immune system functioning at optimal levels. Culture Starter kits can be found in your local health food stores or online.
