Regularly eating high-carb, high-sugar foods is bad for your waist, but it could also spell danger for your mind as well. According to Dr. Agnes Floel, leading author and German neurologist at Charite University Medicine in Berlin, elevated blood sugar levels are becoming important markers for cognitive decline and dementia. To establish their findings, researchers measured and compared sugar levels in two test groups – abnormal and normal levels. After testing, they noticed the higher sugar subjects performed worse during memory exercises.
Insulin, which converts glucose into energy, is a so-called balancing act. Carbohydrates have the capacity to throw off hormones, sleep cycles, and energy levels. If levels continue to rise and fall, conditions such as pre-diabetes and diabetes may develop, which can lead to elevated stress levels, a common signifier for many well-known age-related diseases.
One-hundred and forty-one participants, ranging in ages from 50 to 80-years-old, were included in the study. To provide more accuracy, researchers excluded any individuals with prior memory, diabetes, drinking, or obesity issues.
In each case, subjects had their blood checked after 10 hours without food, and they had an MRI scan as well. The test, which consisted of 15 unrelated words that individuals had to remember, was repeated after various periods of time. When researchers finished compiling the all the data, they noticed the higher blood sugar test subjects did worse during memory assessments, compared to the less elevated groups, but blood sugar levels can be equalized.
